"Throughout
the world there exists a group of women
who feel mightily drawn to giving care
to women in childbirth. At the same
time maternal and independent, responsive
to a mother's need, yet accepting full
responsibility as her attendant, such
women are natural midwives."
-
Prof. GJ. Kloosterman, noted Dutch obstetrician
Normal
Natural Birth A midwife
is a specialist in normal birth. Midwives
are educators for the childbearing year,
counselors for nutrition and breastfeeding,
guides and facilitators in the wondrous
process of birth. Midwives are also trained
to recognize when a pregnancy is normal,
to help when problems occur, and to take
action in emergency situations. Midwives
actively promote parent participation
in healthcare decisions. They assist
and support families in making informed
choices throughout the pregnancy and
birth.
